Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus

November 17,  2004 - Council 11596 St Brigid

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Mike Nishimuta at 7:00 pm

Opening Prayer: Led by Council 11596 GK  Alfredo Cooke

Pledge of Allegiance: Led by Master Ken Boone.

Warden’s Report:  Given

Recognition of Guests and VIPs.   The family that is moving into the home for Habitat was present and introduced by the Chapter President Mike Nishimuta. The family spoken of the hardship and sacrifice that was involved in their equity. Living on a limited income requires working more hours simply just to pay basis bills and supporting the four boys by being there for them at their activities. The blessing of the house by Bishop Flanagan will be at 10 o'clock. All knights and their families are invited. Monica, the new owner was also awarded two one hundred dollars gift certificates presented by the Diocesan Deputy Jim Wade.

First Time Attendees were recognized. 

Host Grand Knight Alfredo Cooke of Council 11596 and DGK Don Schieffer were recognized and members of the host council and the Ladies Auxiliary were thanked.

Minutes.  Minutes were approved with a minor correction on the date. 

Chapter Chaplain Bishop Tom Flanagan - is at the Conference of Bishops in Washington.

President’s report - Chapter President Mike Nishimuta

Next months meeting is an open meeting - spouses are invited and each Knight is requested to bring desert or a food dish.

Entries for family of the year and Knight of the year are due tonight and Secretary Louis Benavides will be accepting those.

Every council was requested to help meet the Chapter half way, to provide five names of members or businesses that could help in raising funds for the golf tournament. Each one hundred dollar team will help the chapter in meeting the goal for the Habitat house. If you names and addresses please provide them to Reggie or Ernest or any of the officers.

Mike Nishimuta invited District Deputy George Terrell to tell the Chapter about the recent Installation of Officers for Council 13523, Assumption Seminary. We were honored to  have the State Deputy involved in the ceremony.

 The chapter voted to approve the treasurer’s report.

General Agent:  The agent for South Texas reminded everyone that their agents are available for help them get to Star Council and in helping the council recruit.

Correspondence -  None.

Chapter Committees:

1.  Golf Tournament - President Nishimuta told a story of how we need to meet God halfway in achieving our financial goals. To raise $60,000, we'll need 100 donations or sponsorships at the $600 level.

2. Habitat for Humanity - Sam Szalwinski.    A recap of the last months events in completing the house. Stronger help is needed for next year construction. The last weekend had 35-40 people who come out to finish the house on the inside. Another 40-50 young people were there on Saturday to do the landscaping and 15-20 of these young people also completed two other homes where other organizations did not show up.

3. Religious Appreciation Dinner.  Co chairs Rudy Escamilla and Russell Amsbury reported.  Date changed again to Feb 20 not Feb 6 as previously stated due to Super Bowl Sunday.  The dinner will be at 4140 starting at 4 p.m. All councils are requested to get involved in a donation of liquor, cash, or door prizes( such as shaving gear and supplies, gift certificates etc).  All the committees are also requested to participate. District 30 will provide all of the bar tenders for the two bars. All knights and their spouses are invited to attend.

Old Business

Knight of the Year and Family of the Year. The Chapter will select and recognize a Knight of the Year and a Family of the Year for their contributions to their Council, Church and Community in 2004. The awards will be presented at the December Chapter Meeting and Christmas Dinner on December 15, 2004, at Council 3345.  Entry Requirements: The Knight of the Year and the Knight in the Family of the Year must be active members of a Council in the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 2004.  One entry will be accepted for each Knight, and one for each Family, from each Council in the Archdiocese.  After a review of the documentation, the decision will be made and the winners invited to receive their awards at the December Meeting. New Business

Diocesan Deputy Report -   Jim Wade.  Reminded everyone that Bishop Tom will be celebrating his 48 anniversary as a Knight. Looking for a place to hold the mid year conference in either January or February on Saturday. The softball tournament previously scheduled is to be played this Sunday.

State Directors and Committee Reports

Church Liturgy: Joe Lopez.  Absent

Education and Training: Ken Martinez.  Catholic Charities is moving December 4th to 202 W. French and needs brother knights to help in the move. If  you can help please call 271-3743.

Awards/Reports & Forms Chairman: Ken Boone.    Nothing significant to report.

Fourth Degree. Ken Boone. Thanks to all Sir Knights who turned out for the Funeral of Msgr Silverman. It was a full house and an impressive turnout.

Retention - No report.

Special Olympics.  Don Smallwood. Absent.

Guest Speakers:

Tom Korte. Thanked all the Sir Knights who attended the rosary and funeral of Monsignor Silverman.

Buddy Gomez. Host District Deputy invited and provided maps for the next Chapter meeting which will be an open meeting. He reminded everyone to bring a dish.

Fred Garcia. Invited everyone to their annual Christmas Dance. Donations are $25 per couple. Also Council 6833 is looking for cooks to help in feeding the needy of the Parish for Thanksgiving on November 21.

Mike Morrison. The are two councils which are sponsoring an over night trip to Dallas to watch the Cowboys. There are still room for 7 couples. Mass will be at the hotel. Cost of the trip is $330. If interested contact Mike at 558-9353.

The Next meeting will be Dec 15, Council 3345.

The sick and in distress were remembered.
