Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus

May 21, 2003

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Kenneth Martinez at 7:10 pm

Opening Prayer: Bishop Thomas Flanagan gave the opening prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Warden’s Report: Brother Ray Dominguez certified all present.

Former Past State Deputies and Chapter Presidents were recognized. First timers from Council 8789 and 7016 were recognized.

Treasurer’s report (Wayne Pipes):

Balance as of May 21, 2003 was $1,823.20

 Expenses of $4,635.51: Freemon Sattelmaier for ASA Directory and printing, reimbursement to St Joan of Arc, Charlie Carvajal for the Couples retreat, Ken Martinez for Conventional hospitality, and the Oblate School of Theology donation.

 Income of $3,140.40 was reported from the couples retreat, convention hospitality, Council 6833 for religious appreciation dinner, James Balsam and Raul Vieyra for the couples retreat, and net sales of ASA pins.

 The account balance is $327.89, and the chapter holds a CD with a term of 180 days valued at $5,935.44 maturing on 9/25/03.  The chapter voted to approve the treasurer’s report.

 Chaplain’s Report (Bishop Thomas Flangan). The Bishop said he was at a retreat at Holy Spirit Convent, and told the sisters he had a Chapter meeting. They couldn’t believe the chapter was having a meeting on the night of a Spurs semifinals game.  The Bishop gave thanks for those who assisted with the KC Couples Retreat. He asked us to remember the sick, especially Bishop Joe Delaney, who has cancer, and to pray for vocations.

 President’s report (Chapter President Ken Martinez).

Correspondence (Chapter VP Bob Von Lehmden)

Bishop Michael Pfeifer of San Angelo and Rev William Morell, President of the Oblate School of Theology, sent thank you letters to the Chapter  for the donation to the Oblate School of Theology at the Spring Gala on April 2.

Dennis Alvey, Council 786 sent a letter thanking the chapter for their ad in support of the Council’s 100th anniversary.

Sunday, July 27 will be KC night at the Missions.  Game time is 6 pm.

Chapter Committees:

1. Habitat for Humanity: Bob Von Lehmden.

2. Chapter Rosary and Social. Fred Diaz, GK Council 9342.

3. Squires: Lonnie Roberts advised all to check their mail for forms which need to be completed for all those working with youth. The Squires convention will be in Brownsville Jun 27-29. You must have paid up dues to attend.

4. Pro-Life: DD Earl Mills briefed the chapter on today’s news of HB 15 - a proposal for a 24-hour waiting period for those seeking an abortion. Proposed by Rep Frank Corte from San Antonio.

5. Centennial. More pins are available from the Chapter.

6. Hospitality Suite. St Paul Council 7265. 

Old Business:

The San Antonio bid to host a state convention was received and turned down at the recent State convention.

El Papa Poster: We committed $1500 and are a few hundred dollars short.

Oblate Gala: $1000 dontion to Oblates from the chapter.

New Business:

The nominating committee of Bros Mike Urrutia, Chuck Monroe and Louis Martinez announced the nominees for the Chapter officer election:

Lonnie Roberts asked that we remember that the Chapter is the “Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter,” not the San Antonio Chapter.

Forms for Knight of the Year and Family of the Year are due by the end of June. Please submit them for your Council.

Fourth Degree Report

There will be a Fourth Degree Exemplification on October 4 at Council 4140.

Speakers:

Eddie Garcia noted that Assembly 1855 was recognized in the last issue of Columbia Magazine.

Richard Gonzales announced a Flag Raising Ceremony at Council 5262 on Memorial Day.

Lonnie Roberts stated that his email address is rivetroberts7@earthlink.net

Host Grand Knight Emil C. Kruciak was recognized along with the cooking crew.

Host District Deputy Theo Gerlich was recognized.

Two raffles were conducted.

The next meeting will be at Council 7770, St. James, 907 W Theo on June 18.

The sick and in distress were remembered, including Jerry Janecka.

Bishop Thomas Flanagan gave the closing prayer.

The meeting was adjourned.
