Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus

July 21, 2004. St Mary Magdalene Council 9902

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Kenneth Martinez at 7:00 pm

Opening Prayer: Worthy Chaplain Bishop Tom Flanagan gave the opening prayer and conducted the installation of officers.

After dinner remarks and presentations:

President Remarks.

Last year at this time, we presented the Knight and Family of the Year at the installation of officers. Some of you may be expecting that tonight.  It is my belief that due to the changeover in officers at this time of the year, the publicity for this award is not getting out well enough. Many worthy nominees would be overlooked by incoming GKs who didn’t know about the nomination process, and the new slate of officers did not have time to review the nominees. I proposed, and the officers agreed, to move this award to our December open meeting. We will be looking for nominees by November 4, so we can make our selection in the month before the meeting.

During this past year, the Councils in this Archdiocese, you leaders have done great things. At the State convention in May, many awards were given to you. I would like to briefly recap some of those.

This past year has been a tremendous year, and it will be hard to fill the shoes of Ken Martinez.

Last Sunday, the Gospel spoke to us about the Marthas and the Marys.  We need people who are servants, who are always considering what needs to be done, and they do it without fuss or needing a big show of recognition. But we also need people like Mary, who sit at the feet of the Master and listen. They absorb the message, and they respond to it. Ken has shown us the best of both. He has done the servant’s work, behind the scenes, calling, visiting, cajoling, begging, and planning.  But he is also one who sits at the feet of the Master and listens. He is devout, obedient, worshipful, and he hears the many voices and listens carefully to all the needs.

For this year, here is my pledge to you. I will work hard as a servant, be available to you, support you, and listen to you. I will give you all my effort. I only ask that you reach down within yourselves and keep giving – because we Knights are different than the normal folk – we are involved in something that is unselfish, and we are involved in giving back to our community in thanks for the blessings we have received.

Mike Nishimuta presented a plaque of appreciation to Ken Martinez.

Ken Martinez presented plaques to outgoing officers, and a certificate of appreciation to Freemon Sattelmaier.

Announcements:

The Guadalupe Home for Unwed mothers is located at 1223 S. Trinity Street. They have a small lawn, and are in need of assistance in maintaining it. If there are any Councils in the area who would like to volunteer to help, if we can get a Council a month to visit it twice during the month, that should be sufficient.

Host GK Juan Castro was recognized and thanked for the dinner.

Host DD Carl Bernal was recognized.

Raffle was conducted.

The Next meeting will be August 18 at Council 7016, Blessed Sacrament, 600 Oblate Drive.

The sick and in distress were remembered.
