Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus
February 20, 2008 Council 6358 Schertz, Good Shepherd
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by the Chapter President Rudy Escamilla
Rosary: Deacon George Vick led the chapter in a rosary.
Pledge of Allegiance: Led by Master of the Sword, Ken Boone.
Warden’s Report: Given by Brother Roy Ball reported that 83 members were in attendance.
Opening Prayer: Led by Chapter Chaplain Bishop Flanagan
Recognition of Guests and VIPs: President Escamilla welcomed State Advocate John Pfister, guests, Past State Deputies and State and Chapter Officers.
Council 6358 GK Larry Gladu and DD 36 Jerry Pavliska were introduced and thanked for hosting the February meeting.
First Time Attendees were recognized.
Minutes. Minutes of the January meeting was approved with mentioned changes and corrections (as provided on the web).
Chapter Chaplain Report: Bishop Flanagan spoke about Lent about how important it is to be in fraternal love. There is fraternal love in the home, the parish and in this organization. Have a Great appreciation for those who serve you. All the priest, nuns, brother and deacons are in need of your Prayers. We pray for all of those who are sick especially for Charlie Carvajal, many of you know him as a very special person who is there for all of us. Pray and serve someone with love that you know, I leave you with the word that Our Lord spoke to us to Love one another as I have love you.
President’s Report: Chapter President Rudy Escamilla mentioned that he will be out of town for the next chapter meeting. The mass for Bishop Zurek, the Knights of Columbus Texas State Chaplain, was not well attended. The religious Appreciation Dinner is this Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Council 4140. Bishop Yanta will be moving into the former residence of Bishop Zurek and he has requested back up drivers from the Knights. The Golf Tournament is holding a planning meeting every Monday night at Holy Spirit School Library at 7 pm until April 7. New blood is needed. Diego Peña will be in charge of the Chrism Mass as San Fernando.
Treasurer’s report: Chuck Green stated that the Chapter has a balance of $9,981.26 with expenses of $5,681.26. Seventeen councils have donated for the religious appreciation dinner, including checks from some of the ladies auxiliaries and the Catholic Daughters of America. Several councils donated during the meeting. The Treasurer's report was approved as reported.
General Agent: Michael Henriquez, FIC reported two General Agencies have been opened in San Antonio. Michael reported that they are still hiring. He requested prayers for his father who is in care.
Correspondence: Vice president Diego Peña reported on the annual convocation. Father Jeff Peel the convocation coordinator, thanked the knights for the drinks and door prizes that the Chapter provided.
Chapter Committees: 1. Coordinator of Religious Affairs: Pro-Life- Wayne Pipes - No report.
2. Golf Report- Rusty League reported that volunteers are needed for the Habitat Golf Tourney. The limit is 180 golfers, so we hope to make more money by having a Casino Night/Auction Party. For live auction prizes, we are looking for anyone who has a hunting lease for two days, and we are also looking for a plasma TV. The next committee meeting is February 25th at Holy Spirit at 7 pm in the school library. The Gala is $25 per person and it includes heavy appetizers, $1000 gambling chips and two drinks. Rusty requested for the ‘woman’s touch” to decorate the activity, for more information go to the website at http://sagolf.org.
2. Habitat for Humanity- Golf Tournament is set for April 14, 2008 with auction party/casino night on Saturday, April 12 at Retama Race Track. There is free parking.
4. Retreats- Men’s-Charlie Carvajal got seriously hurt on a ski trip in Utah, please include him in your prayers. Makes plan for next year’s retreat in October, 2008.

6. Religious Appreciation Dinner- Roy Ball and Ray Neumann are the Co-Chairs for the Dinner, 24th of February at Council 4140. There is a need for gift baskets, gift cards, and deserts.
7. Veterans Administration, Guadalupe Province Representative for the VA Volunteer Services- Henry Gonzalez and Wayne Pipes
8. Tootsie Roll Drive- Bill Roeglein reported that the next Tootsie Roll Drive is scheduled for April 12, 2008. The deadline to turn in names and payment ($25 per Council) is March 17, 2008.
9. Seminarian Report- Angel Perez stated that we submitted a report that 100% of the 47 seminarians from the San Antonio Diocese are sponsored. One of our council has since reported that they will not be able to provide financial support to their seminarian, so he requested a council to take over the financial support for this young man. If your council supports a seminarian please provide a report so your council can be reimbursed. Please contact Angel Perez. Please invite the seminarians to all your council’s activities, also provide them with a gift card on their birthday. There are four councils who are supporting four seminarians each. There are also five brother knights who also personally support a seminarian.
Old Business: New Business: There is a handout for the Noel Henry Benefit for Religious II, March 30. Last year $40,000 was raised for the Brigidine and Presentation Sisters. This year the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate are the beneficiaries. Table for 10 at the Dance/social on March 30, 2008 at St. Gregory the Great Hall. Tickets are $30 per person
Diocesan Deputy Report: Jim Wade stated that our Diocesan Basketball Free Throw is this Saturday. On March 8 at 9 am the State Free Throw event is scheduled at Antonian High School. At this point in time San Antonio is $22,000 short of our goal for State Charities. Another charity which the order is supporting is the Wheelchair Foundation and we have received very good support for this.
Fourth Degree: Mike Morrison. No Report.
State Directors and Committee Reports: Former State Deputy: Ray Newman Assistant to State Deputy: Jerome Janecka. Star Council State Committeeman: Mike Urrutia. Fr. McGivney Guild State Chairman: Mike Urrutia. State Charity: Membership retention: All Council Active Chairman: Ken Boone reported that seven DD have met their goals for the year.. Youth Sports State Chairman: Carl Bernal. Church Liturgy State Chairman: Joe Lopez. Education and Training: Awards/Reports & Forms Chairman: Membership Retention Chairman: Chuck Green and Don Smallwood. Special Olympics: Guest Speakers: State Advocate John Pfister reported that the Dallas convention will have a dinner on Friday at the Dallas World Aquarium. The hotel is now the Sheraton not the Adams Mark. He mentioned that he is here selling tickets, the hospitality suite is 1200-1400 sq ft and we should book the rooms on each side of the hospitality suite. He also mentioned the education scholarship for $1,000 and no one from San Antonio has submitted an application. He also discussed the IRS requirements. In the past, any council that earns $25,000 or more must file a form 990. Under new IRS regulations EVERY COUNCIL must file a form 990-N, no matter how much income it makes. The report is due on May 15. Although the penalties will not start immediately, pay attention to this requirement or your Council may lose it's tax exempt status. The form is easy to fill in and it must be done online at www.irs.gov.
Holy Trinity Council 9967 will host a major degree on March 8 starting at 8 am.
Catholic Men’s Conference 2008. Brother Knights Pedro Saenz and Charles Billman reported that this year the Catholic Men’s Conference will be on Saturday March 15, 2008 from 8 am-6 pm at St. Matthew Catholic church at the McDonald Center. The cost will be $35 person to include a Conference Packet, Breakfast Tacos and Texas Bar-B-Q lunch.
The Next Meeting will be on March 19th at Council 5262.
The sick and in distress were mentioned and prayed for.
