September 15, 2004 Little Flower Council 6833

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Mike Nishimuta at 7:00 pm

Opening Prayer: Led by Bishop Flanagan. Father John Suenram of Little Flower Parish gave the prayer before the meal.

Pledge of Allegiance: Led by Chapter President Mike Nishimuta.

Guests.  Were recognized. 

First Time Attendees were recognized. District Deputy George Terrell introduced new GK James Flynn and members Tom Kennedy and Omar Saldana of  the new Assumption Seminary Council 13523.

Host Grand Knight Marcos Villalon Council 6883 was thanked and all members of the host council were thanked.

Guest Speaker Rose Orosco with Guadalupe Home, a project of Catholic Charities. It is a transitional home for homeless unwed women. She identified several brother knights who are either on the board or helping directly with the home, which is located at 1223 S. Trinity. It provides a safe haven for nine women at a time.  Several help projects were identified and a request for help made. Brother knights are asked to help volunteer with these projects on this Saturday September 18 at 8:30 a.m. for about three hours.  They will be having a fund raiser Fandango Under the Stars, a Dinner-Dance and Auction on Saturday, November 13, 2004.  for tickets call 210-476-0707. 

The next guest speaker Rick Doucette, Associate Director of Social Concern Office of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

The Chapter Chaplain

President’s report - Chapter President Mike Nishimuta

Reported that the Hispanic Bishop Conference events were very successful. All councils and brother knights were thanked for their donations of liquor and cash, participation in working the bar or transportation.

Chapter Committees:

1.  Golf Tournament - Mike Nishimuta. The Golf Tournament had an advertisement in today's San Antonio Express-News thanking all the sponsors for last years event. All point of contacts were requested to save today's paper and use it to visit their contacts for request for funds. The next meeting will be at Holy Spirit church on Oct 4 at 7:30 pm.  Our goal is $48,000.  See our golf tournament website at http://golf.texascomputerhelp.com.

2. Habitat for Humanity - Sam Szalwinski reported that things are looking good. Many knights have committed to help. One date is in need of help on September 24, Friday. This date will have a need for an additional help of ten to twelve more people to help work on the house which will include framing.  Food for the day will be provided. Leadership day is October 1, Friday. This is the day for all Council Leaders to come together to work on the house. Work starts at 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.  Jim Wade, Sam Szalwinski and Mike Nishimuta met the family we are starting to build for: Monica Hernandez, a single mom with four boys from ages seven to seventeen.  See the building schedule and more at http://golf.texascomputerhelp.com/house.htm

3.  Mens Retreat - Paul Martinez is co-chairman for the Chapter Men's Retreat September 24-26. The theme is "the Holy Spirit is my past, My present, My future." The cost is $75 before Sept 13 and $80 after. You do not have to be a Knight to attend. Please invite your sons, brothers, fathers, church members.   See more information here.

4. Religious Appreciation Dinner. It is scheduled for February 13. There is a need for volunteers to coordinate the food, bingo, and the event.

New Business

Guadalupe House Lawn Care Director is Rose Orosco. They do not have a lawn mower and need a council or two who are interested in doing this service on a rotating bases. The Volunteer Coordinator is Mary Spaeth (husband PGK 4315). Council  3345 is coordinating Knight volunteers. Please contact Mike Nishimuta at 601-1373 if your Council can help.

Diocesan Deputy Report -  Brother Jim Wade. He stressed that all councils should get involved in building the house especially on Fridays.  Major degree this Sunday at St. Vincent DePaul. A Diocesan Softball Tournaments will happen on October 24 at Rusty Lyons Field No. 1 and 2 at the corner of Basse and McCullough.  Make sure that we have something for our young brother to do. Recruit, recruit, recruit. The Tootsie Roll Drive will start on Oct 16. All moneys go towards the councils Charity goal.

State Directors and Committee Reports

Council Growth: Jerry Janecka.  All council should have submitted the form 185 this Friday.  13 councils have not paid their per capita.

All Council Active: Mike Urrutia, spoke about all councils active. We have 15 councils who did not bring in a new member last year. We will provide help to those councils to recruit new members. Each Grand Knight must have a recruiting plan. Each council must submit the plan to the committee.

Church Liturgy: Joe Lopez requested that any council who want to have the icon they must submit a request for the 2005-2006. Currently each council is requested to pray three Hail Mary's for Life. They are now asking that each council pray three Our Fathers for world peace.

Education and Training: Ken Martinez

Forms Chairman: Ken Boone.  Forms 185 need to be submitted to State, Supreme and DD. If submitting by email, make a copy before you transmit.  August 1, form 365 due. DD needs to submit forms for dormant Councils.

Fourth Degree. Ken Boone.  New Supreme Master is Joseph P. Schultz. The Fourth Degree Exemplification scheduled for Oct 2 has been cancelled.  He will be in Oklahoma City for planning this year. Nov 6 is the Veteran Day Parade all assemblies are invited to participate.

General Agent  - No report.

Retention - No report.

Special Olympics.  No Report.

Richard Gonzales major degree at St Vincent DePaul at 7 p.m. on Sept 19.

Fred Garcia Council 6833 introduced Father John Suenmar, who was requesting 30,000 signatures to bring the movie of Saint Therese of Lisieux to San Antonio.  San Antonio has been granted the honor of a special premiere of the film on September 29, the same day as the premier in New York City. The premiere will be at Fiesta 16 and Live Oak branches of Regal Cinemas. The movie will open in major cities on Oct 1, with Houston and Dallas as the only two Texas cities. The producer of the film, Mr. Leonardo DePhilipis will be here on October 1 for mass at 9:00 a.m. Information is also at http://www.theresemovie.com 

Rene Rocha Council 10240 St Luke Dance on October 16. $25 per couple and $25 per table.

Vic Fliller Council 8065 eighth annual Sausage Fest at Council 8065 St. Matthews Church at 6:30 p.m. $10 per person all you can eat. September 25, 2004.

Eddie Garcia, District Deputy 43 called up Tony Rodriguez to present two awards to Council 7770 for the Columbian Award and Council 8633 accepted by Grand Knight Marcos Villalon.

Chapter Softball tournament, Sunday Oct 24, 8 am to 10 pm at Rusty Lyons Field No 1 and No 2, at the corner of Basse and McCullough. Tournament entry fee is $60. For more information contact Rafael Galaviz at 924-4593.

Juan G. Martinez Council 5262, is requesting support for the major degree this Sunday September 19, 2004.

St Mary Magdalene is having their church festival, truck raffle.

The Next meeting will be Oct 19 Council 5262,  St Vincent DePaul Parish.  5763 Ray Ellison. 

The sick and in distress were remembered.
