Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus

September 20, 2006 Council 4183 New Braunfels, TX

Call to Order:  The meeting was called to order by the Chapter President Rudy Escamilla

Opening Prayer:  Council 4183 led the chapter in a rosary

Pledge of Allegiance:  Led by Mike Morrison.

Warden’s Report:  Given by Roy Ball number attending the meeting 64.

Recognition of Guests and VIPs: State Deputy Larry Zapalac and Executive Secretary Joe Ramirez were recognized. Guests from Habitat for Humanity were introduced: Dennis Bechhold, CEO, VP Stephanie Weiss, and Coordinator of Faith Groups Jennifer Gonzalez. Dennis spoke briefly about Habitat, and Chapter President Rudy Escamilla and Habitat KC coordinator Henry Gonzales presented the $50,000 check for the fall build. 

Priscilla Escalera and her children Elijah, Kaylah and Allison, were present and Priscilla spoke briefly about how important the house was to her.

First Time Attendees were recognized.

State Deputy Larry Zapalac introduced DD Sam Szalwinski who introduced Worthy GK Matt DeLozier. Council 7613 received the third place Award from supreme for the best program in the order. Council 7613 also received the State award for the top Council in the state for recruiting. State Deputy Zapalac also awarded Council 13704 Padre Pio an award for recruiting.  Gk Chuck Munoz was introduced.

Minutes.  Minutes of the June meeting was approved with the following changes: The state golfing tournament is being hosted by the Schertz Council 6358 the Council number was incorrectly posted. Also left off the minutes was the award presented by out going Chapter President Michael P Nishimuta to out going Chapter Secretary Louis J Benavides for his two years of faithful service as Chapter secretary. Former President Nishimuta presented Louis with the Profiles of Men of Faith who made a difference, By Their Works. In making the presentation Mike stated that Louis is the type of Knight who should be listed in this type of publication.

Chapter Chaplain Report: Bishop Flanagan spoke to the Chapter about his trip and his encounters with various medical staffs. He stated that the attitude of people reflected their inner confident and thus make other feel comfortable and with the Lord. We as Knights should all work to find that inner spirit to make others welcome.

He reported that the Knights of Columbus Insurance Company continues to be one of the strongest companies in the insurance business. He reported that on 9/11 the Knights of Columbus Insurance company was the first insurance company on the ground in New York providing checks to those in need and it could do that only by the support of all of us.

Correspondence:   

Chapter Committees: 

1.  Golf Report-  The tournament is scheduled for April 16. All Councils are encouraged to donate early, if the funds have been approved by your Council. Chairman is Rusty League, telephone 404-9613. 

2.  Habitat for Humanity-  Henry Gonzales reports that we are about a week behind. Most Fridays have NO one committed to help or bring food. If any Council can help, please contact Henry at 733-5325. Landscaping day is October 28. Calling on all youth, Squires to help landscape. The house blessing will be on Nov 11, with a picnic. Tickets for picnic must be paid for in advance, $5 each. 

3.  Coordinator for Religious- Wayne Pipes. 

4.  Men’s Retreat – scheduled for this weekend, Sep 23-25.

Diocesan Deputy Report:  Jim Wade presented awards to various councils for State Texas Charities. Wayne Pipes has been appointed the Pro-Life Couple. Habitat has started on the 21 August with 13 build days. Get out and ask if the men you saw at church if he is a knight. Ask them! Let keep this ball rolling for we can do great.

Fourth Degree: Mike Morrison spoke about the October 28 at St Matthew for the fourth degree.
