Msgr. Louis Joseph Robert Silverman died of a heart attack at the Jordan River in Israel on Thursday, November 4, 2004, as he led 58 Pilgrims on a tour of the Holy Land. It was his 11th such tour and one that was close to his heart. Born on April 10, 1935 to a French Canadian mother, Gabrielle Silverman, and a Jewish father, Theodore Silverman. Msgr. Silverman was a frequent visitor to Israel and a fervent supporter of the Christian community in Jerusalem. Because of his unique heritage, Msgr. Silverman was able to advance the cause for keeping a Christian presence in the land where Jesus Christ lived and taught. As part of his commitment to this cause, he served on the Board of Directors and as Spiritual Advisor to the Association of Hebrew Catholics (AHC).

Raised in New Haven, CT, Msgr. Silverman completed Notre Dame High School in 1953 and attended New Haven State Teachers' College prior to entering the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He served at Sampson AFB, Geneva, NY, Lowry AFB, Denver, CO, and Ramstein AFB, Ramstein, Germany. While in the Air Force, Msgr. was awarded an Army Occupation of Germany Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. He later served Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, as a Reserve Military Chaplain from 1968 to 1971. After leaving the Air Force, Msgr. completed a B.S. degree in English at Southern Connecticut State College and earned a teaching certificate from the State of Connecticut, after which he taught for two years at New Haven Junior High School.

Responding to the 'call', Msgr. entered the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Seminary in San Antonio, TX in 1960. He was ordained a priest by Archbishop Lucey on May 25, 1967 at San Fernando Cathedral on the Feast of Corpus Christi. Following his ordination, Msgr. Silverman continued his education attending St. Mary's University Graduate School of Theology; University of San Francisco Graduate School; receiving a Masters of Divinity degree from Oblate College of the Southwest in 1973. In addition to this college work, Msgr. Silverman spent a great deal of effort and enthusiasm for learning history and languages. Fluent in spoken English, French, German, and Spanish, Msgr. had a reading knowledge also of Greek, Italian, and Latin. He was a scholar of great repute. His parish work however was his priority and he served the people of God in several posts:

1. St. John The Evangelist and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Hondo, TX (Associate Pastor).

2. Our Lady of Grace, La Coste, TX (Vicar Substitute).

3. St. Pius X, San Antonio, TX (Associate Pastor).

4. Good Shepard, Schertz, TX and Immaculate Conception, Marion, TX (Pastor)

5. St. John Neumann Church, San Antonio, TX (Pastor).

Along with his parish service, Msgr. filled a number of administrative offices such as: Dean of Seguin, Board of Directors for Today's Catholic, Chaplain for Blue Army-Archiodiocese of San Antonio, Secretary/Treasurer of Priests' Senate and Council of Priests, and Pastor's Committee for Archbishop's Appeal. One of the educational experiences most cherished by Msgr. was the time he spent in Rome in the Institute for Continuing Theological Education, North American College Graduate School in Italy (1983). As part of his nonwavering interest in history, literature, and theology, Msgr. Silverman traveled to every major country in Europe and to Mexico, Canada, Russia, Egypt, and Bagrain.

One of Msgr.'s abiding interests was the Knights of Columbus. A fourth degree knight himself, he also served as a KC Chaplain. In every parish of his service, Msgr. cooperated with and encouraged the work of the Knights.

One of the organizations which he sponsored and nurtured was the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. The mission of KHS is to support the Holy Sites in Jerusalem and to act as an educational arm of the Church in the Holy Land. He was awarded the Order of the Shell by the Patriarch in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1983. Msgr. Silverman's considerable knowledge of history, theology, literature, language, and cultures equipped him well for his role as motivational speaker and homilist par excellence. Determined to educate and inspire his audiences, Msgr. employed a classic Socratic method in his sermons which kept listeners awake and sometimes wary of being 'called by name' to answer questions or respond to comments. While parishioners became accustomed to Msgr. Silverman's erudition, they were constantly challenged by his eloquence and the very force of his faith. No Sunday sermon was without its moments of intensity and overwhelming glory of language.

As a tribute to his ability to motivate others, Msgr. was listed in the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, 2nd ed., American Biographical Institute, 1989. Another of Msgr.'s deep interests was the cause for the Beatification of Edith Stein, a Jewish convert to Catholicism who was martyred in Auschwitz during WWII. Msgr. was instrumental in her cause and attended the ceremony raising her to her high status, as a canonized saint on October 11, 1998. The ceremony took place in Germany as befitted a German Jewess named St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. While no aspect of parish activity was unimportant to Msgr. Silverman, he especially involved in programs which encouraged young men to enter the priesthood. He was also concerned with the group COURAGE His support for Opus Dei also was very important to him.

Msgr. Silverman's unique heritage and his extensive education fueled in him a strong desire to support both Jewish and Palestinian Christians in their difficult balancing act between the Israeli hard line and the Palestinian offensive. Msgr. was happy and comfortable in his pursuit of a peaceful solution for this land of Jesus. It was a blessing that he visited that beloved place once more before his death.

Msgr. is survived by his mother, Lady Gabrielle Silverman, 90, of San Antonio; his mother's sister, Anita Sirard of Chicopee, MA; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M., Friday, November 12, 2004 at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, 6680 Crestway, San Antonio, TX 78239 with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 A.M., Saturday, November 13, 2004 at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, with Most Reverend Patrick F. Flores, DD, Archbishop of San Antonio as Celebrant and Bishop ēlvaro Corrada, S.J. as Homilist. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Tarantino, Joe McCullough, Greg Kiolbassa, Mike Bustamante, Douglas Deffenbaugh, Dan Peebles, Hugh Tuttle and Jonathan Beckett. Honorary Pallbearers will be Candido Carrada, Doug Dailey, David Talafuse, Joe Vizzone, Joe Zimmer, Wallace Vaughan, Ray January, Jessee Couling and Walt Wilby.
